Excavation

Last week they came and excavated for our new kitchen addition.  The first step was to cut a section of our patio away. 

Last time the back of our house would look like this.

When the tractor arrived, Owen had a front row seat (or rock).

First the tractor removed that little section of patio.

And we had the unpleasant surprise of discovering that our foundation was rotting away.  When they built our house, they piled road mix up against the wood and didn't do any weatherproofing.  The constant wet road mix then rotted our wood away.  And since we knew it was like that where we tore away a part of the patio, we knew it probably looked like that the whole way around the patio.  So, change of plans - this remodel will now include a new deck.  Awesome (not).

Once the corner of the patio was out, excavating for the foundation began.

And in the end we were left with a giant pile of dirt for the boys to play in....

And an awesome deep hole for our new kitchen to fill.
